By Kenneth Morris

Jewish dietary laws are complex but this does not distract from the taste of a food long sort after. Kosher granola offers an exciting replacement to any on the go foodstuffs. It is full meal and can be either eaten with milk, on its own or with yogurt.

There exists a complex set of instructions derived from the Torah both orally and written which describe the correct methods of making a product kosher or non kosher. These instructions are followed religiously and to the letter of the law. So that when an ingredient or product is bought and has the correct hecsher or validation from a rabbinical authority, it is assured that the product is permissible for consumption.

There are some rules that must be followed to ensure it is authentic. The cooking and preparation process must be watched and scrutinized that no other particles enters the cooking or production process. A person called a mashgiach must be present to supervise production and to check it thoroughly. This person must have obtained a certificate from the Jewish Rabbinical Court to provide this service and is well versed in all the laws pertaining to it.

A Beth Din is a Jewish Court of Law and is usually found in any city around the world where Jews coexist. This body or organization passes all laws that govern Jewish life and this also includes the dietary laws. A hechsher costs money so that usually products are a little bit more expensive than the same counterpart.

This meal on the go has been around for years and is sought after by sportsmen and women such as football players, hikers and next to any sport that is found. Its inception dates back to the city of Dansville, New York and was first produced in the eighteen sixties as a healthier alternative. It is consumed worldwide today and is considered to be one of the few healthier foods on the market.

It is a recipe easily undertaken or alternatively can be purchased from any grocery or health shop. Its main ingredients such as oats, seeds, dried fruit and nuts are added with other grains depending on the consumer's taste. It is mixed with syrup, honey or maple syrup and also oil or butter. Kids love it as it is a healthier alternative than purchasing sweets or candy.

The mixture of nuts and seeds and dried fruit, with butter or oil, are tossed together with honey or maple syrup and then allowed to bake to form a crunchy mass. Because of the honey or maple syrup addition, care must be taken so as not to burn the mixture when baking. Once the final product is ready it can be broken up into crunchy bits and added to practically any meal such as a sprinkled over a smoothie.

There are many varying combinations that make up a good granola treat. Sesame seeds, flax seeds and other seeds can be thrown into the mixture. In most countries around the world, bars can be bought in packaging for that on the go meal when it is needed. A valid hecsher or kosher authentication however should be advertised on the wrapper ensuring that it is a hundred percent authentic.
