Other procedures visualized using this machine include neuro simulation, vascular surgery, pain management, percutaneous replacements, orthopedics, and neurology procedures among others.

These devices are manufactured by a handful of companies in the United States and around the world too. Some of the manufacturers in the United States are Ziehm Imaging, Siemens, Philips, and GE Healthcare/OEC. Outside the United States, some of the notable manufacturers are Shimadzu, Hitachi, Orthoscan, and Hologic. The US manufacturers are also global market leaders as well as leaders in specific parts of the world such as Europe.

A lot of advancement in technology has been going on in the medical imaging field. Some of the components used in older medical units have been substituted with new and better technology. For example, new systems today have 3-D navigation aids and a much better image processing software. These improvements have resulted in a huge increase in the quality of images produced.

With better technology, the dose of radiation that is delivered to the patient has also been reduced significantly over the years. X-ray radiation can be very harmful to the human body if one is exposed to large doses. Similarly, they can be very harmful if one is exposed to them for an extended period of time. Some of the bad effects that the rays cause include cancer. To ensure safety, exposure is kept to minimum dose and number of times.

Older models of c arms were made with image intensifiers, which have now been replaced with flat-panels. Image quality in flat-panels is better than in image intensifiers. Flat-panels also reduce the overall size of the c arm so that the machine can fit in a smaller operating room. In comparison with image intensifiers, the field of view in the flat-panels is wider.

Ziehm Imaging is credited with inventing flat-panel systems when it released its Vision FD flat-panel mobile c arm. Philips would later in 2009 follow suit by releasing its Veradius system. At the moment, most manufacturers of these systems use flat-panel technology. The many advantages that are associated with flat-panel technology make it important to have in an operating room.

There are various forms and configurations of the c arm. For instance, some are moveable while others are the operating room. Cost reduction, increased accessibility, and enhanced mobility are some of the benefits that are presented by many mini versions of these machines that many manufacturers have introduced.
